Manila Music: Paranoid City

A couple of weeks ago, I  went down to Saguijo, a local bar here in Manila, to hear a band I've been wanting to catch live for ages. The line-up was pretty great--bands you hear a lot about in the scene--one of which was Paranoid City, a synthpop/8-bit band. I was instantly taken away as they made their way into the intro of the first song they performed, Here We Are! Here We Go! Maybe it is the synthpop fan in me speaking, but looking around the room that night and seeing people happily dancing to their tunes, I knew right away that this band was different. The energy exuded in the little space of Saguijo was so uplifiting--exactly how good music should be.

Here is the featured track by Paranoid City, Here We Are! Here We Go! You might want to turn your volume up a little, and leave some space around you for when you (might) start dancing.

Quick trivia: in their Facebook account, Paranoid City appertains their band name to an episode of the hit TV series, Friends, wherein Phoebe, Monica and Rachel were discussing when Ross started to become so paranoid with his relationships.
Monica: Oh, sure it does! In high school, you weren’t jealous at all even though all your girlfriends were cheating on you!
Phoebe: All right, all right, so up until ‘92-93 he was very trusting, then ’94 hit, Carol left him and bam! Paranoid city!
Well, that's another reason to love the band. Because who doesn't love Friends? The band's debut album, Viewfinder Dreams, is now out, containing 11 tracks of synthpop music. For orders, drop them an email; contact details can be found in their Soundcloud account. (A few) Photos of the band's gig in Saguijo are also available in my main blog.
