Despite The Pains of Being Pure at Heart being on the road for most of the year, drummer Kurt Feldman still found time for his side-project, synth band, the Ice Choir. In the demise of Feldman's former side band, The Depreciation Guild, in 2011 due to "musical differences" within its members, the musician went on his own way and produced, between luggage and plane rides, Afar, Ice Choir's debut album.
Judging from Kurt's 80's bangs and penchant for synth/dream pop (from what we can tell based on Depreciation Guild's music), it isn't such a big surprise that Afar sounds like music off an 80's radio. It transports you three decades back, which, as I've never really been in that electro pop era myself, I can only say must have been pretty amazing, music-wise. Feldman's creamy vocals and poetic verses such as in the track "Everything Is Spoilt By Use" are extremely enjoyable, most especially in this featured track, "Teletrips", which showcases a waterfall of lovely synth and lyrics.
Streaming of the entire album is available here, via Stereogum.
